The Havanese come in such a variety of colors unlike other breeds that have limited variety. But, the Havanese change their colors!
In my 13 years of experience here is a little bit that I have learned about Havanese color and how it changes. White isn't always white. A puppy can be born completely white but then start getting a little bit of creamy colors on ears and on back, and as a full grown adult be white with apricot but then a year later go completely white again and apricot the next. Just like white, I thought that black will stay black. We have had a few that start out black but then by 8 weeks have a glimmer of brown to their black which is referred to as Havana Brown, but they usually aslo get some silver as an adult. Chocolates are born dark (almost black) then lighten as they grow and sometimes will lighten all the way to a sandy caramel. Reds are the opposite and darken as they grow, they start out kind of blonde and then get more and more orange each week. Now sable! Sable tricks everyone. Sable starts out dark with sometimes cute contrasting markings and then by the time they are a year old either lighten to a golden with some black and grays mixed in or turn completely white.
In the gallery below the first picture is Jasmine who is a red sable - see that cute little dark face, well it went away. Iris is the next two pictures, she was a dark chocolate when she was born and held onto it for the first year then started to almost turn a gorgeous red but now she is a sandy brown. Next in the gallery is Violet and Maddie, they were twins. Both black with tan points, then Maddie started to have a glimmer of a faded black like a dark gray. You can see how Violet stayed black with gray points but Maddie lightened lots. Next is Radley, he was mostly white as a baby with a hint of orange but as time went on more and more of that red came out. He's still more white than red but he does produce a red puppy here and there. The last picture is just for fun. This was one of Iris's litters and it was so cute how they were born darkest to lightest and the variations in the browns.
